Marketing Employment

Marketing employment remains strong throughout the US, despite recent negative economic cycles.  By 2012 the marketing employment rate is expected to increase by 21.3 percent for marketing managers, analysts, and associates due to anticipated demographic and economic changes. Evolving technologies may improve the marketing employment outlook as skilled and knowledgeable professionals are required in the marketing process.

Marketing employment statistics for 2002 reveal that marketing managers held approximately 192,080 jobs. Compensation for marketing employment varied significantly depending upon the size and nature of the employer, its geographic location, and economic conditions. In 2002, most marketing managers earned between $54,760 and $109,190. The lowest 10 percent of the profession earned less than $39,730, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $109,190. Most market research analysts earned between $38,760 and $76,310, with the lowest 10 percent of the profession earning less than $29,390, and the highest 10 percent earning more than $100,160.

Marketing employment appeals to numerous professionals due to the variety of careers that are available.  Found in practically every industry, marketing jobs offer a number of benefits to dedicated professionals.  Those in the marketing industry may enter positions such as vice president, marketing manager, coordinator, analyst, assistant, or telemarketer.  While each specialty has a concentration in a specific area, all focus on promoting and selling goods.

Vice presidents and directors oversee the actions of associates, ensuring all goals are met and costs are kept as low as possible.  A marketing or research analyst is responsible for investigating past and present markets, developing accurate forecasts, and compiling information into charts, graphs, and/or reports.  Based on the analysts’ findings, administrators, managers, and coordinators work together to determine marketing strategies, develop promotions, or create advertisements.  Marketing assistants are flexible associates employed for completing tasks to assist other marketing professionals.  Assistants must have a thorough knowledge of all marketing processes in order to deliver optimal support.  Telemarketers are professionals utilized for handling inbound and outbound sales calls.  Telemarketers spend the majority of their day communicating with a variety of clients and potential customers, so they must be personable and enjoy working with the public.

Experts are projecting a large occupational growth for marketing careers through 2014.  As domestic and global markets continue to compete with one another, the demand for experienced and educated professionals is expected to escalate.  Candidates with past experience in marketing occupations are expected to experience exceptional opportunities if they also possess excellent communication, interpersonal, and resourceful skills.  Depending on the marketing position, there are a variety of training programs available.  Entry level occupations such as a telemarketer or an assistant commonly require little more than a high school diploma, but employers are beginning to prefer associates with extended training.  More advanced positions normally mandate a bachelor’s degree in marketing or a related field.  Professionals interested in advancing their careers quickly benefit from continuing education or voluntary certifications that are available.
